Climate Change and Future of Electric Vehicles

Cybertruck by Tesla

Climate Change

Climate change, a global emergency that threatens to upend the global economic stability and change our way of life. As climate change breathes down the world’s neck, countries have quickly started transitioning to greener energy.

However, as quickly as EVs are becoming prevalent, the rate of improvement of $/KWh of batteries is not fast enough to make EVs as accessible as gas cars to the general public. So, that begs the question, what can be done to make EVs just as accessible as gas cars? The answer lies in refining the heart of EV, battery technology.

Battery Technology

The age-old battery technology, called lithium-ion batteries, have been used in almost everything. From electric toothbrushes to mobile phones, lithium-ion batteries dominate the technology scene, including in EVs.

However, along with lithium-ion batteries, there has been ongoing research into hydrogen fuel cells to cleanly power vehicles. While hydrogen fuel cells promise cleaner fuel to power vehicles, it has its’ critics. Elon famously called hydrogen fuel cells as “fool cells” and “mind-boggingly stupid” to use them as power source for vehicles. Critics have often pointed at the process of production, compression and conversion of hydrogen into electricity being highly inefficient.

Speaking to Jeff Dahnwho is a professor in the Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science of Dalhousie and is on the NSERC/Tesla Canada Industrial Research Chairhe said that “In a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, 35% of the energy that the solar cell produced or the windmill produced is actually used to drive the car forward.” Further saying that “you would need to build 3 times as many windmills or solar farms compared to powering vehicles with lithium-ion systems”. While, lithium-ion batteries from “solar to charging the batteries is about 95% efficient”.

With increased focus on EVs’ range, further research is being done in refining the lithium-ion batteries. But some companies have refined the battery to charge faster, while others have focused on the number of miles. When asked about the emphasis on superfast charging, Jeff called it “sort of nuts” and, he’s right. With Tesla superchargers spread out across the US and Canada, coupled with EV ranges from 500 km – 600+ km, the issue of superfast charging is practically non-existent.

Refining Battery Technology

Then, what truly is the next step in refining the heart of EV? For Tesla, it is using silicon anode and nickel cathode for the batteries. But for other automotive companies, the answer lies in the next generation of batteries, solid state batteries. Several companies, ranging from Toyota to Honda, have begun investing in and developing solid state batteries.

So, what’s different between solid state and lithium-ion batteries? Solid state batteries show a promise of being safer with a longer lifetime. They also can have a larger energy density than lithium-ion batteries, which makes them attractive for long-range EVs. However, that comes with a big asterisk. As Jeff put it, “solid state batteries are going to be great if they can be made at an acceptable cost … so that you can build a car that people can afford”.

Lithium-ion batteries on the other hand, can be cheaply made because they are being manufactured on a huge scale which leads to cost reductions. Solid state batteries are only just being researched and developed and as such, are incredibly more expensive than lithium-ion batteries.

With time, EVs will be made just as accessible as gas cars through refinements of battery technology. By ultimately bringing the cost of the batteries down of the batteries through improvements, the price of an EV decreases, making EVs more accessible to the general public.

Perilous Process of Childbirth in Microgravity

Infant in an astronaut suit

“All civilizations become either spacefaring or extinct” – Carl Sagan captured the interest and imagination of millions of people throughout the world and throughout time. His influence still rings today as countries and aerospace companies around the world race into the dawn of the second space race.

The opening golden gate of this space age reminds us, that there is still much to be done as humanity takes its first steps into becoming a spacefaring civilization. One of the biggest mysteries of microgravity is, what happens when a child is born in space or on another planet? How would we ensure a smooth process of childbirth in microgravity?

Childbirth and Gravity

Previous research has indicated that microgravity negatively affects muscle and bone mass. The longer a person stays in space, the more muscle and bone mass they lose. These effects would be incredibly problematic for the female during child birth. A weak bone mass of the pelvis could potentially lead to a rupture which would be extremely fatal to the female and the infant. But that is merely overcoming one peril of many.

On Earth, the gravity aids in developing infant’s muscle mass and bone density. However, in microgravity, the force of the gravity is substantially weaker. Because of the weaker gravity, the infant’s muscle mass and bone density may not grow to the same extent as infants that were raised on Earth. This could potentially lead to infants which are far more weaker.

Ever wondered how babies develop their sense of balance and their spatial orientation? Or how you can coordinate your movements so effectively? The answer lies in your vestibular system. It is a sensory system which relays information to the brain about motion, head position and spatial orientation. It also aids in keeping our balance, stabilizing our overall movement and posture. During birth, the infant’s vestibular system is stimulated by gravity which helps to stabilize the infant’s spatial orientation and sense of overall movement, including balance. However, in microgravity, there is very little force to stimulate the vestibular system, therefore, potentially leading to a defective vestibular system in an infant.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the potential dangers in giving birth in space or even on other planets. We do not fully know of the dangers of humans giving birth beyond Earth. But that did not stop research from going where no human infant has gone before.

Experimentation

Several small animals and plants have been used in microgravity experiments to explain how microgravity affects reproduction. However, the results have proved to be a mixed bag of conclusions.

In a 2008 study by April E Ronca et al., concluded that rat pups who were exposed to microgravity developed abnormal vestibular system. Further work done on rats in space suggests that microgravity lowers the total amount of rat sperm counts as well as increasing the abnormalities. Additional studies done on crickets, nematodes, fruit flies and medaka fish showed that successful mating and reproduction in space can occur.

The answers to the basic biology questions of birth in space may go unanswered for many years as ethical questions swirl around it. Would it be okay to send a pregnant woman to space for science? Would it be okay for a woman to give birth in space? There are many hurdles to overcome but until we do, we will be forever stuck on the cradle of human civilization. Should we go out there wandering the cosmos, we will have to face the basic biology questions but the reward will be one small step for man, and a giant leap for mankind.

What Is Arcology

What is an arcology, and why does it matter? The original word ‘arcology’ was created by Paolo Soleri in 1969 as a portmanteau of ‘architecture’ and ‘ecology’. He believed that this generated concept would help to convey the evolution of the human city-organism, and its necessity for our future as a species on this planet. His magnum opus, Arcology: The City in the Image of Man, goes into a general degree of depth regarding this, though it fails to define the cities as anything more than very broad ideas. While this is a definition of arcology, it is important to critique various works to help distill the truest function and purpose of a real, practical, arcology.

The work Soleri performed helped to inspire decades of iteration, resulting in grand prestige projects like the Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid, or Crystal Island. However, none of these have been built, and all of them have been the antithesis of the properly understood definition of an arcology.

To merge the city into the environment – to bridge the gap between architecture and ecology – you must hold onto the awareness that the vastness of structures like the Crystal Island only seek to maintain efficiency in space use, and do not in truth integrate themselves into the biosphere as a component organ. This element of design is one of the most often overlooked portions of the original arcology, and one that leads to such failed creations.

Why is this important? We look at the very word itself: ‘architecture’ and ‘ecology’ – a merger of two ideas. To try and distill that into purely architecture as a demonstration of a firm’s engineering prowess misses the point entirely. Rather, the integration of the design process directly into the environment as a component of it attains the true definition of an arcology. But how is this expressed realistically you may ask? We’ve seen efforts akin to this in history, with an explosion of interest in the modern age as climate change continues its relentless march forward. Buildings that incorporate the native ecology exist, such as Changi Airport with the ‘Jewel’ rainforest. Bringing together the reality of design from both an ecological perspective and a human perspective will allow us to finally attain the true dream of arcology.

However, the question arises as to why you would build such a thing, given the high level of complexity involved? The answer lies in the efficiency of the structure. By design, it is meant to house all food production, water distillation, sewage processing, material extraction/recycling, and local levels of industrial production. However, it should be noted that when Soleri invented the concept, it was 1969, and he had no idea the technology we would have access to today. In that regard there is a modification that I would like to present – instead of industrial production, it becomes a matter of necessary production. Economies of scale can apply to things like mass transit or other larger scale elements, but on the individual level a huge amount of the items we use on a daily basis can in effect be 3D printed thanks to tremendous advances over the last decade.

Degrowth as a tied in component of the arcology helps to achieve greater efficiency while also increasing quality of life and reducing dramatically the human impact on the climate. By ensuring the integration of the arcology into the biosphere as an organelle of the greater cell within the vastness of the Earth organism, we can actively help repair our damaged world.

Changing the way we see the world – Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR for short) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment, where real-world objects are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, across multiple sensory modalities, being visual, haptic, auditory, somatosensory, and olfactory. It is a system comprised of 3 basic features, a combination of the real and virtual worlds, accurate registration of 3d graphics, and real-time interaction. Augmented Reality changes the way a person views the real world, whereas Virtual Reality (VR for short) completely replaces the real-world with a whole new simulated environment. Augmented Reality is a combination of 2 synonymous terms, mixed reality, and computer-mediated reality.

Augmented Reality has a lot of powers, that if implemented into reality, it has enough capabilities to change the way we see the world. In fact, Augmented Reality has already been implemented in certain fields. In America, the American Airforce’s Armstrong Laboratory implemented virtual fixtures for training from the 1990s. AR was commercially released by most gaming and entertainment business, and currently is being used in almost all fields for better productivity and learning. AR is now being used in education, medicine, communications, entertainment, aerospace, and the military. This Tech is currently being implemented in various forms like hardware, Displays, Eyeglasses, HUD, Contact Lenses, Virtual Retinal Displays, and many others. For example, a HUD or a Head-Up Display is currently being developed for Airforce Pilots so that they can have the necessary info about their aircraft right in front of their eyes at all times. Envisioned contact lenses that can allow you to see stuff just like those cyberpunk comics? Bionic Contact Lenses are currently being developed for the military to help soldiers focus on close-to-the-eye images and far away targets at the same time. Many companies like Innovega are already working on implementing AR into tech that can be used commercially. Even Google has developed eyeglasses built for commercial use which involves the use of AR technology. Want an even more basic application? the tracking technologies we use also entail AR technologies. It is also suggested that AR can be used in the Music Industry which can be used for visualization, music production, mixing, and control.

Overall, AR seems to be a very important thing for us to develop the way we change how we learn, produce, and implement new things each day. It is such a versatile technology that can be used in almost every Industry. Just like we say, ‘all coins have 2 sides’ AR technologies could also have bad side effects on our future.
In a paper titled, ” Death by Pokemon Go”(which if you don’t know, is a game that took the world by storm, and has also caused a lot of deaths) researchers at the Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management claim that the game caused a disproportionate increase in vehicular crashes and associated vehicular damage, personal injuries, and fatalities in the vicinity of ‘Pokestops’ where users can play the game while driving. Along with this, 80 percent of advanced internet users claim that they want to remove unnecessary stuff around them. They also want to remove signs like billboards, shop windows, etc. Now it seems like AR is much of a threat to companies than an opportunity.
See the source image
This also means that AR can sometimes be unaware of the surrounding dangers. Consumers want to change their surroundings to something that reflects their opinion. 2 out of 5 people wish to change how they physically see the world and also how people appear to them. Also, commercial applications of AR technologies can result in privacy issues as AR depends on the ability to record and analyze an environment in real-time. Although certain constitutions allow for recording in the public interest, the constant recording of an AR device makes it hard to do so without also recording outside the public domain. This can raise certain local legality issues. In terms of individual privacy, it might lead to access to information which usually is not supposed to be known. This is due to Facial Recognition technology. AR usually automatically passes info about the people that the user sees, there could be anything seen from social media, criminal record, and marital status.

In conclusion, AR is a very useful technology that can be implemented across almost all industries, which can change the way we see the world. Also, on the other hand, Augmented Reality also has certain side effects that can raise a lot of problems for certain multi-national companies. So, AR can be used for the betterment of all industries, but they should be used under control and a lot of other technology and methods should be developed by companies that can be affected by AR technologies before making AR available for commercial use.

The Future of Sustainable and Clean Energy – Nuclear Fusion

Humanity has always been evolving, and a major factor indicating the evolution of humans as a species is the amount of energy we consume. In the early stone ages, we used to manually do everything for ourselves. Then came the discovery of fire, which lead to the proper cooking of food. We then started coming up with simple machines, until the Industrial Revolution, which then leads to the invention of machines like, boring machines, cranes, and then we discovered the process of splitting atoms, which lead to Nuclear Fission. Our Population has always been growing and is estimated to be 9.7 Billion by 2050, which will increase the demand for better and sustainable sources of energy. Our next best bet, towards sustainable energy, is Nuclear Fusion.

We already know how atoms are split to obtain energy. The energy obtained by splitting atoms is known as Nuclear Fission. The Process of Nuclear Fission is to take a heavy atom, mostly Uranium-235 (U-235) is split in half by shooting neutrons at the atom. This, therefore, excites the nucleus of the Uranium atom, releasing a burst of kinetic energy and also energy radiated through gamma rays. The average energy that is produced by a fission reaction of one atom of U-235 is 200eV. Since there are trillions of atoms inside one kilogram of Uranium, there is a whole boatload of energy that can be obtained. On the other hand, as of 2017, U-235 is only 0.72 percent of all isotopes of Uranium present on the earth, I.e. there is only 44226.72 tonnes of Uranium present on earth, and some of that is already in Nuclear Reactors and weapons.

We know that the Sun shines at the energy of a trillion nuclear bombs per second. This energy is obtained due to Nuclear Fusion. Nuclear Fusion bombs are already being made, and humans have realized how useful Nuclear Fusion is. An average Nuclear Fusion between 2 Hydrogen Atoms can release the energy of >400keV. Despite the fact, that fusion can release tremendous amounts of energy, Nuclear Fusion is safer than Nuclear Fission. If a fission reaction goes out of control, it might harm us and cause dangerous amounts of damage. Instead, if a fusion reaction goes out of control, then the plasma inside the reactor cools down, therefore terminating the reaction. The Tricky Part about fusion is, that it is hard to conduct a reaction because of the immense temperatures needed to commence the reaction. Fusion Reactions start at a point known as Fusion Ignition Temperature, once this temperature is obtained, the fusion reaction becomes self-sustained. The Fusion Ignition Temperature at the core of the sun is 15 million Kelvin or 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is really tough to reach since, the amount of pre-requisite energy to increase the ambient temperature so high, is higher than the estimated energy output.

Currently, a lot of companies, institutions, and organizations are trying to harness the power of nuclear fusion. Currently, 2 main confinements are going to be experimented with for Nuclear fusion.

  1. The Magnetic Confinement
  2. The Inertial Confinement

  1. The Magnetic Confinement

The magnetic confinement is donut-shaped confinement which is going to use electric fields to direct the plasma inside the confinement in a certain direction at phenomenally high speeds. The approximate temperature inside the confinement is going to be 150,000,000 degrees Celsius. The confinement is going to be externally cooled with liquid helium to prevent the overheating of the current-carrying wires, as strong magnetic fields need high currents passing through them. The Helium is going to be cooled to 2-3 degrees above absolute zero. This experiment is going to feature one of the highest temperature gradients in the universe. ITER, T-15, WENDELSTEIN, HSX, and LHD are all fusion experiments involving magnetic confinement.

See the source image

  1. The Inertial Confinement

The Inertial Confinement consists of a Hohlraum, or small confinement for the fuel pellet and that pellet is going to be bombarded with strong UV(ultra-violet) rays and infrared rays, imploding the pellet and increasing temperatures high enough for fusion to take place. NIF, HiPER, Z-MACHINE, QIANGGUANG are experiments involving the Inertial Confinement.

See the source image

See the source image

In the Inertial confinement, the fuel pellet is also known as the fusion target. Laser beams or laser-produced x-rays rapidly heat up the surface of the fusion target and form a surrounding envelope of plasma. The Pellet is then compressed by the rocket-like blowoff of the hot material. Due to the compression, the fuel core reaches the density 20 times that of lead, and due to such high pressure, it only ignites at 100 million degrees celsius. After that, the pellet implodes, causing a thermonuclear burn to spread throughout the compressed fuel, and yields energy.

Nuclear Fusion is a very important part of our plans for exploring space and establishing a multi-planetary presence. It might also get us to level 1 on the Kardashev Scale*. Gryphon Technologies and many other companies are currently working on developing a nuclear propulsion system, which can be used in the future to propel rockets that have capabilities larger than our current rocket engines. Nuclear Fusion is going to be very important for us to develop as a species. Nuclear Fusion might give us the ability to generate enough energy to do a lot of things that we are currently, incapable of. Once we can control a nuclear fusion reaction, a cup of water can give as much energy as a whole barrel of oil we use currently. All of our current experiments are going to be conducted with a stellarator** configuration.

*The Kardashev Scale is a scale used to measure the technological advancement of a species based on the energy they can use. The Scale was made by a Russian Astronomer Nikolai Kardashev. The Scale has 3 main levels. The first being the planetary civilization, indicating the ability of a species to use and store all of the energy of their respective planet. The second being the stellar civilization, that indicates the ability to use and store all the energy of their respective planetary system, and level 3 being the ability to store and use all the energy of its entire host galaxy. Humanity is still at level 0.7 on the scale.

**A stellarator is a plasma device that relies primarily on external magnetic fields to confine the plasma. Plasma is one of the 4 main states of matter. It is Solid-Liquid-Gas-Plasma.

The Sun and its Humongous Habits – Coronal Mass Ejections

The Sun is the most majestic body in our solar system. It is violent and also a graceful celestial body. The Sun is considered to burn with the energy of a trillion nuclear bombs per second. It also releases huge flares of plasma that travel throughout the solar system at very high speeds. This article talks about Solar Winds and CME’s that are released by Sun.

In a nutshell, Solar Winds are charged particles released by the sun that permeate the solar system. These Winds are polarized and thus these winds are influenced by the magnetic fields of the planets and other celestial bodies. These winds travel at speeds of 250-750 km/s. The solar winds travel as far as the Kuiper Belt. The heliosphere is where the influence of these solar winds are felt. When surpassing the Heliosphere, the momentum of the wind reduces. The Heliosphere is formed because of what is considered as a termination shock.

(Termination Shock: Don’t get overwhelmed by the word, ever went to the basin in your bathroom and opened the tap and watched how there was a shock created at the ends of the circle. Here is an image to help you understand)

See the source image
The above image is an example of a termination shock. The same phenomenon occurs in space forming the heliosphere.

Thankfully, due to the magnetic fields on earth, we don’t have to worry about extrasolar radiation. If there were no magnetic fields, we might not even have an atmosphere.

The Process of nuclear fusion, which fuses atoms in combination to create usable energy, occurs in the Sun to create heat. This phenomenon only occurs inside bodies that have exceptionally high pressures, which is present at the Sun’s core. Under such high pressures, matter ionizes to form plasma and creates magnetic fields. This process can sometimes create extremely large effects on our atmosphere through a Coronal Mass Ejection – where plasma waves generated can lead to high energy protons flood towards the direction of the waves. This is usually called a Solar Particle Event (SPE), or simply known as a ‘solar storm’. These waves are so strong that they usually compress other celestial bodies’ magnetic fields. It changes the shape of the field into somewhat a teardrop and forms a long tail at the end of the field. If the energy contained in the field is too large for the field to sustain, it breaks and the plasma particles head straight towards the body. If it happens on earth, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

See the source image
This image shows how the magnetic field of the earth is compressed by the wind, and the formation of a tail behind it.

Nuclear fusion is currently being researched as a means of sustainable energy. The Sparc reactor, developed by MIT(w/mit.edu) and a Massachusetts tech company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems (w/cfs.energy) have researched the influence of nuclear fusion upon our atmosphere.

These geomagnetic storms cause no harm to humans but cause a lot of harm to electronics. We all know that wherever there is electricity there is magnetism also. These CME’s can destroy the transformers we have that we depend on to generate current leading to a huge failure in power which might take years to set back up. Fortunately, engineers nowadays have already prepared for these kinds of events, and scientists watching the sun say that it takes a CME a few hours before it reaches the earth. Researchers say that a CME just went a very few kilometers away from the earth and we were fortunate to have missed the storm. Predictions say that it could lead to a loss of 2.6 trillion dollars worth of objects in America Only and an estimated time to set back all things is 4-10 years.

We have already seen a few solar storms hittting earth. The most dangerous one is the 1989 Quebec Blackout. The geomagnetic storm was so strong that it caused a half day power failure in Quebec, some satellites were tumbling out of control in space, the US had over 200 power grid failures within minutes of the storm beginning. Quebec lost its entire power system in 92 seconds, USA had failed GSU’s and additional transformers failed due to load rejection. This was the strongest solar storm we have ever witnessed.

See the source image
The above is a small gif showing the entire solar storm, that occurred on March 13, 1989.

In Conclusion, the Sun releases huge solar flares every second and thus forms solar winds. When these flares get large they become CME’s. These winds travel at high speeds and push all protons in space with its momentum. These protons are what form the beautiful auroras. Luckily, CME’s occur only once in approx. 100 years.

Currently, engineers are developing other methods of parting electric current flowing from transformers, to other sources and let the other sources hold the current. Once the solar winds have passed the planet, these sources will be allowed to release the electricity and getting everything back to normal.  Another method engineers have found out, is to just cut out the power supply, a few hours before the coronal mass ejection reaches the earth, and after it passes the earth, the power supply can be turned back on. Our engineers have constantly been helping humanity come up with effective and practical solutions to real-life problems using science. The only catch is, there is a very high chance of a Coronal Mass Ejection occurring between 2020 and 2050 and is going to be much more powerful than the previous ones. This time, there are much more satellites put up in orbit, and we have all our facilities only because of these satellites. If our engineers, don’t come up with a solution to save our satellites, we might incur much more losses just because of the sheer cost of those satellites, and also lose Internet, and Electric service for a long time. We to date trust our engineers, and now our lives are in their hands. All we can do is hope that engineers can save, billions of dollars of wreckage and losses, and come up with better solutions to escaping a Mass Ejection.
